The Chicago Cubs Are On Fire: Can They Keep the Momentum Going?

Not enough people are talking about how hot the Chicago Cubs are right now. The Chicago Cubs are absolutely on fire right now! Over the past week, they’ve been hitting the ball like it’s nobody’s business, and it’s showing in the stats. With a team batting average of .333, they’re averaging more than 10 runs per game. That’s right—10 runs per game! The closest team in terms of runs during this stretch is the Detroit Tigers, but they’re trailing the Cubs by a whopping 29 runs. The Cubs have racked up an incredible 73 runs in just 7 games.

Each year, MLB fans vote over multiple weeks to determine who should start in the All-Star Game. This year, the voting process occurs in two phases. In the first phase, fans vote for every position, including designated hitters. The top overall vote-receiver in both leagues is granted an automatic starting spot at their position. The rest of the positions advance to the final phase, where fans vote on the top two players at each position to secure a starting spot in the All-Star Game. For outfielders, there are three spots, so six players advance to phase two.

As a fantasy owner of Ronald Acuña Jr. for 2 of the last 3 seasons, I must say it has been quite fun. However, when I selected Acuña with the 1.1 pick in the draft this year, I thought I would be receiving a top 10 player at worst. The player of the week in the NLDS was Bryce Harper of the Philadelphia Phillies. Many would argue Nick Castellanos, but the confidence and momentum Bryce provided throughout proved to be too much for the Braves to handle.
After game 2 of the series, Orlando Arcia made comments about Harper being doubled up at first base to end the game. During game 3 with the series tied at one apiece, Harper hit 2 home runs and made sure to let Arcia know by staring him down and letting him hear it. After this, the Phillies never looked back with massive amounts of momentum playing behind a hostile home crowd and taking the series 3-1. Harper finished the series 6-13 at the plate with another 5 walks. He scored 5 times and added 5 RBI. Three of each of those came from a home run.

The player of the week in the ALDS was Yordan Alvarez slugging at a historic rate. The Alvarez-Abreu punch in the Astros lineup proved to be too much for the Twins as either player could’ve been named the Player of the Week. However, Yordan is slugging at an all-time high percentage through the first series, and it is going to be very interesting to see if he can keep it up. His SLG % sits at 1.313 through 4 games in the 2023 playoffs after accumulating 4 home runs and 2 doubles along with a single in only 16 official at-bats.
